Congratulations to everyone who raced yesterday at the Lost Dutchman races! Sounds like the course was pretty challenging this year! I’d also like to recognize Kevin Taddonio who raced the Valley of the Sun Cycling Stage Race this weekend. Kevin raced in the CAT 4 group and placed 4th in the individual time trial with an avg speed over a 14 mile course of 27mph. He then raced well in the road race and criterium and ended up taking 12th overall just 1:19 out of first place. Kevin’s main focus this year is on IM Hawaii. He qualified at IMAZ this past November with a time of 9:04. I hope everyone is getting excited about the fast approaching multisport race season. Desert Duathlon, JCC Sprint, Havasu/Bartlett Tris, Oceanside 70.3, etc. will all be here very soon!

The Art and Science of Triathlon Symposium - Colorado Springs, CO - Day 2 - It was another full and informative day today.  The highlight without question was the keynote address given by Erik Weihenmayer.  His story is an amazing one, to be sure.  He has climbed the seven summits, including the summit of Mount Everest, lead climbed on El Capitain and numerous other rock faces hundreds and sometimes thousands of feet high, ice climbed, paraglided, you name it - and he is blind.  It is a powerful testament to the strength of the human mind and soul.  We enjoyed many technical training lectures today (the "science" of triathlon), but we would have to say that so far in this symposium, the "art of triathlon" has hit home with more resonance.

The Art and Science of Triathlon Symposium - Colorado Springs, CO - Day 1 - We were treated to a full day of informative lectures.  The highlight was the keynote address by Johan Bruyneel, the 2009 Tour de France Team Astana Manager.  We are soaking up the latest and greatest thinking as it pertains to triathlon coaching and look forward to sharing what we have learned with you!

Ironman St. George Course Preview - We enjoyed great weather this weekend as we previewed the Ironman St. George bike and run courses.  You are in for a challenging race, but one that is wonderfully scenic.

Joe Gibson 1971-2009

It is with sad hearts that we report the death of one of our athletes, Joe Gibson. You may have read about Joe in Saturday’s paper. Here is the link to the article in the Arizona Republic - http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/2010/01/02/20100102doctordeath0102.html.  Joe was an Emergency Room Physician at Banner Good Samaritan Hospital and had been a lifelong athlete. Joe had been training with us for almost two years and was focusing on the Olympic Distance. He was hit by a car while running last Tuesday and died of head injuries that he suffered. Joe will be greatly missed.  Rest in peace, Joe .

Ironman Cozumel 2009

Ironman Arizona 2009 Results

Wow, what a race on Sunday at Ironman Arizona! The weather was very nice and there were quite a few stellar performances. An IM is never easy and everyone from the fastest finisher to the last finisher has to overcome a tremendous amount of suffering and self doubt to make it to that finish line.

We had 20 finishers.   Eleven of those athletes were first time Ironman racers. There were seven athletes who achieved a PR for the IM distance and we had one athlete qualify for Kona.

Job well done to all of you!
