Bermuda Challenge Triathlon. In addition to the races we had going on this past weekend locally, I want to draw your attention to an event that Frank Smith, one of our athletes from Cincinnati, completed this weekend. The event is called the Bermuda Triangle Challenge. It consist of a 1 mile timed run on Friday, a 10K on Sat, and a full marathon on Sunday. The courses were run over hilly courses. You can enter each event individually or complete all three. Frank completed all three events. He ran the mile in 7:30 taking 33 of 43 in his AG. He then ran a 53:43 in the 10K the following day and finished 20/60 in the AG. Finally, Frank finished the marathon on Sunday with a time of 4:45 taking 10th in his AG. His overall placing for the weekend was 47th overall. As endurance athletes, all of us are drawn to the unusual and the challenging. The Bermuda Triangle Challenge certainly fits that description! Congratulations Frank!

ITU Long Course World Championships,-Henderson, NV, Amica Tri- Firebird Lake, Women’s Half Marathon, Phoenix 10K, Blue Water Tri, Desert Duathlon. What a weekend for racing! The cool weather lended itself to some fast times and chilly bodies. There were quite a few races this weekend but first I want to recognize Dwight Lundell. A month after racing IM Hawaii in 13:05, Dwight lined up for the ITU Long Course World Championship in Las Vegas on Sat. The swim ended up being cancelled due to 37 deg air temperature. Dwight adapted to this change quickly and took the time trial bike/run format head on. Dwight ended up riding the 120km bike leg in 4:10 and the ran the 30Km run in 3:10. His finishing time of 7:18 took first place in the M65-69 AG. This was 23 min ahead of second place! Congratulations Dwight on becoming a World Champion!

Peter clocked a 1:53 finishing time and that included a 36 min 10K split. Adrienne Leblanc also had an outstanding race taking second overall female in the International Distance race. We want to recognize Paula Schmidt, from Alaska, who raced the PF Chang’s 30K in Honolulu this past weekend and finished in 2:59 and placed 10th in her AG. Also, Frank Smith of Cincinnati finished the Stone Steps 50K run in Ohio. Frank had DNF’d the race a few years ago but vengeance was his this past weekend! Nice job Paula and Frank!

As we have been discussing in IM lectures this year, heat is the number one inhibitor of performance for an endurance athlete. Many of you experienced this yesterday at the Soma ½ IM! What a day. There wasn’t a single cloud in the sky all day long and the heat was quite intense on the second lap of that run. Congratulations to everyone who finished as getting through that course yesterday took quite a bit of doing. Many of you were using that race as a dress rehearsal for IMAZ and there were some good lessons learned regarding heat, pacing and nutrition.

Congratulations to Kevin Taddonio, who took 2nd place in the pro division. Kevin ran a perfectly paced raced saving his most effort for the run where he clocked a 1:17 for the fastest run split of the day. It is all about the run! Also, congratulations to our lone Age Group winner yesterday, Preston Miller. Preston took 1st in the M65-69 AG. Congratulations also goes out to Tom Hennessy who podium’d in his AG with a 3rd in the M55-59 AG.
