Swim Instruction

We provide the highest quality swim instruction at Camelback Coaching. Anne Wilson is a former collegiate swimmer, the only certified Total Immersion Teaching Professional in the state of Arizona, and is certified by the American Swimming Coaches Association. She uses the Total Immersion teaching methodology in her instruction and has enjoyed high success rates with her athletes.

Anne coaches people who generally fall into one of two categories:

  1. The swimmer looking to gain efficiency and speed in the water. Ability levels range from beginner swimmers to competitive age group swimmers, high school swimmers, collegiate swimmers, triathletes of all ages and experience levels, to world-ranked Masters swimmers.
  2. The anxious or fearful swimmer. The swimmer who fears the water, experiences anxiety in the water, has had a near-drowning experience, or has never learned to swim.

For the swimmer looking to gain efficiency and speed:

Your stroke is built from the foundation up, so you will begin by learning basic body balance positioning, and alignment. From here, you will add core body rotation, proper stroke timing and an effective catch. You will finish with the recovery portion of the stroke and finally, add rhythmic breathing to your completed stroke infrastructure.

If you are a fit runner or cyclist and can’t understand how you can be out of breath after two lengths of swimming, this curriculum is for you! The instruction is also extremely valuable to an accomplished swimmer because you can always fine tune your form for added speed and efficiency benefits. This is probably one of the best athletic investments you’ll ever make. You can take these swimming skills with you and use them for the rest of your life. Make the choice now to change the way you swim forever!

For the anxious swimmer/fearful swimmer/victim of a near-drowning/someone who has never learned to swim:

The swim instruction I do for you is the most rewarding thing I do. For many, just putting your head under water is the goal. You focus on relaxation skills, floating, and bubbling to start. We can progressively move into stroke technique work from here. Everyone is different and the timeline will be different for each person. Be prepared to be patient, but the process works if you’re committed to it.

Swim instruction is given at McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic Center, located at 15525 N Thompson Peak Pkwy, Scottsdale, AZ 85260.

Swim drill
Lesson content varies based on the swimmer’s needs. We can teach freestyle or any of the competitive swim strokes. For many swimmers interested in improving their freestyle strokes, we will take you through the Total Immersion freestyle drill sequence. This sequence will take you from foundational drills through to a technically sound whole stroke. We begin with balance, move to streamline, and finally, to propulsion. On average, it takes between 4 to 6 lessons to complete the drill sequence. Everyone progresses at different rates, so it just depends on when you’ve mastered one drill for when you are ready to proceed to the next.

For the more advanced swimmer, working on proper catch mechanics can improve your stroke (the distance you travel per stroke) dramatically. We can do a lesson or lessons specifically focused on this topic. We can also work on stroke rate and integrated kicking mechanics. These topics, along with open water sighting and a whole host of additional speed considerations can be covered n detail during the course of a private lesson or lessons.

Semi-private instruction is available at a cost of $55 per person per hour for 2 people or $40 per person per hour for 3 to 4 people.

Underwater swimmer
We videotape your stroke both above and below the water from several angles. Every component of your stroke is then analyzed using state-of-the-art computer software that allows frame-by-frame viewing. We assess your body position, balance and alignment, core body rotation, stroke timing, arm recovery, breathing, kicking, and underwater catch and pulling mechanics. Technique revisions and recommendations will be discussed to help correct stroke inefficiencies. Following your session, you will receive an upload of your video files.

The swim video analysis session also serves as a course in swim theory and it gives a nice overview to the swim lessons that usually follow (the how’s and why’s behind drills, for example). You learn where you are currently, where you need to go, and how you are going to get there.

With rigorous drill practice, time, and patience, a side-by-side swim video of your “before” and “after” stroke is quite revealing and highly satisfying.

Take the time now to correct your stroke for swimming enjoyment that will last a lifetime!
